Julius Caesar and His Entourage as Chess Pieces

This wonderful and massive set of figures contains 32 splendid, hand-made chess pieces, crafted in Italy and wonderfully detailed, with antique-look busts of Caesar and his entourage. Might the "queen" be one of his three wives? Or does the "queen" – partly on account of the clothing – rather depict the Egyptian queen Cleopatra? The bishop figure represents an aquilifer, the bearer of the Roman legionary eagle (aquila), the most important field sign of a legion, whose loss was considered a great disgrace. So the bishop is best kept well protected in the game. The rooks are wonderfully detailed, like the wooden fortification and watchtowers of old, as are the horses as knights and the "pawns" as armed legionaries with sword and shield. All the figures in this chess set are incredibly detailed and finely worked, right down to the facial expression, as are the finely gleaming pedestals on which the busts stand.

Legionaries and the Legionary Eagle as Large Metal Chess Pieces

The 32 large chess pieces combine the classic game with motifs of the Roman military of the time of Julius Caesar. Particularly striking is the legionary eagle, the aquila, whose bearer – the aquilifer – held a prominent role within a legion. Armed legionaries, riders and other militarily inspired figures carry this theme across both chess sides. With an 11.5 cm king and a 3.5 cm base, the large metal set suits correspondingly sized chessboards and combines Roman military history with a decorative Caesar motif. As no chessboard is included, the set can be combined with a suitable board. A chessboard is not included with this set of figures.
