Between wisdom, magic and humour
The owl belongs to the most symbolically charged animals in European cultural history. As an attribute of the Greek goddess Athena, it stood for wisdom and reason – which is why it remains an emblem of knowledge and cleverness to this day. In the Middle Ages, by contrast, it was seen as a nocturnal creature with a brooding reputation. This contradiction is what makes it such a compelling decorative figure even now, carrying very different moods depending on the stylistic world.
