The Markus Mayer range pulls in two clear directions. At one end sit anatomically accurate human skulls, which stand out through their realistic detailing, true-to-life proportions and the carefully worked sutures, dental work and bone texture you'd expect from a piece designed to read close to a genuine specimen. At the other end sit demonic interpretations of the skull motif – pieces with bold sculpted horns, pronounced ridges and exaggerated features that take the form firmly into dark fantasy territory. Alongside these you'll come across an orc skull with sharp teeth as a fantasy-genre variant, and a devil-butler side table that stands out as the most unusual piece in the line – a working item of furniture rather than pure decoration.
Material, finish and where the pieces come into their own
Every piece in the range is crafted from cold-cast resin and designed by Markus Mayer himself, with his recognisable artistic signature carried through into the proportions, surface detailing and finish. The realistic anatomical skulls work beautifully as study pieces in writing desks, libraries, studios or on shelves alongside antique books and natural-history references – proper memento mori objects rather than throwaway novelties. The horned devil heads and orc skulls hold their own as standalone statement pieces on a console table, mantelpiece or feature shelf, particularly when paired with candles and dark interior accents for a layered gothic look.
