Between naturalistic depiction and symbolism
Few animals are as layered in cultural history as the serpent. As a symbol of renewal and healing – think of the Rod of Asclepius in medicine – it simultaneously stands across many traditions for danger and the ominous. This ambivalence turns snake figurines into decorative objects with strong expressive force: they polarise, stay in the memory and suit gothic, mystical as well as naturalistic interior worlds equally.
Tortoises set a different accent. As a symbol of longevity, calm and constancy, they're positively regarded across many cultures – particularly in the Asian sphere. Naturalistic garden figurines show the tortoise in tranquil pose; ornamentally decorated figurines with Indian motifs emphasise the decorative and cultural character. Iguana, chameleon and T-Rex skulls bring further stylistic worlds into play – from playful through to prehistoric.
