Memorial Angels: A Long Tradition of Mourning

In Christianity, angels are regarded as messengers of God and have been an important motif in funerary and memorial art for centuries. Cherubs already adorned Baroque tombs, and in the 19th century the grieving angel became a defining figure in many European cemeteries. The best-known example is the "Angel of Grief" by sculptor William Wetmore Story on his wife's grave in Rome – an angel collapsed in grief over the tomb. Many memorial angels still show the same gesture today: head resting on the arms, leaning against a sphere or a heart.

Angel Grave Ornaments with Light, Photo and Inscription

Tea light holders, solar and LED lights keep the angel visible in the evening; battery-powered LEDs are an alternative where open flames are not permitted. Frames hold a treasured photo, and German inscriptions such as „Ruhe in Frieden“ (Rest in peace), „Du lebst in unserem Herzen“ (You live on in our hearts) or „Ich vermisse Dich“ (I miss you) give words to grief. Large angels over 50 cm tall form a calm focal point on the grave, while small pairs of angels and hearts fit in between plants and grave candles.

What to Consider at the Cemetery

Many cemeteries have regulations on which grave decorations are permitted – a quick check beforehand avoids problems. Smaller figurines should be placed securely and sheltered from the wind where possible. Over winter, it is advisable to remove more delicate figurines from the grave or place them somewhere protected. Memorial angels also suit a pet's grave in the garden, and matching pet urns can also be found under Mourning & Remembrance. Angels without a connection to graves and mourning can be found among the angel figurines and cherubs.
