Sekhmet was one of the most powerful and at the same time most ambivalent goddesses of ancient Egypt. As daughter of the sun god Ra she was both venerated and feared: she brought disease and destruction upon the enemies of the pharaoh – yet was simultaneously regarded as the only one who could halt the misfortune again. Her name means "the mighty one". Her connection to the gentler Bastet reveals the dual nature of destruction and protection so characteristic of Egyptian mythology.

Sekhmet is consistently depicted as a woman with a lioness head – with the sun disc of Ra and the uraeus serpent as headdress. These attributes link her to royal protection and divine power.
