The Egyptian god of the afterlife

Osiris belongs to the most significant gods of ancient Egypt. As ruler of the underworld he stood at the centre of the Judgement of the Dead, in which the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of the goddess Ma'at. Killed by his brother Seth, he was returned to life by Isis – their shared son Horus emerged from this union. Osiris accordingly stands not only as god of the dead but also as a symbol of fertility and rebirth.

Depiction and symbolism

Osiris is typically depicted as a mummiform figure with crook and flail – the classical insignia of Egyptian kingship.
