The Pietà after Michelangelo as a Dignified Motif of Mourning

One of the most famous works of art is surely the Pietà, with Mary as the Mater Dolorosa, made of the finest Carrara marble, which Michelangelo created as a very young artist at the age of 23 and which can still be visited and admired today in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. It is the only sculpture that Michelangelo signed, on the band across Mary's robe. There is surely no one who is not deeply moved by this famous work of art, which portrays Mary's grief – as she tenderly holds her son Jesus, just taken down from the cross, in her lap – with such great love and gentleness. From the figure of Jesus, from whom all life has already flowed and who, on the other side, looks as though he were only sleeping deeply, through to the gentle, delicate face of Mary and the rich folds of her robe, this Pietà on the urn radiates an incredibly strong feeling. It can hold approx. 7000 ml and, for this, has an opening of 8.5 × 14 cm on the underside – which bears the Veronese design – that can be closed with a screw.
