Lycaon as a Crowned Werewolf in the Moment of Transformation

With the crown on his head, a cloak and royal insignia, Lycaon, the Werewolf King of Arcadia, stands in this artful figure, roaring menacingly, on a rocky plinth with the inscription "The Werewolf King Lycaon". The figure shows the hideous monster from Greek mythology in the moment of metamorphosis from a human into a raging werewolf, into which Lycaon was transformed by Zeus as a punishment. The term "lycanthropy" derives from the Greek words for wolf and man and is closely linked with ancient tales of humans being transformed into wolves, in which wicked deeds call down the wrath of the gods. In the Studio Collection, Veronese creates a fitting monument to the monstrous being with this 11 cm tall, 9.5 cm wide and 6 cm deep, small but expressive sculpture made of high-quality polyresin. Through the fine bronzing and artful colouring with red and gold tones, the Lycaon figurine gains additional expressive power. Not only collectors of mystical figures, but also all those interested in Greek mythology, its gods and world of legend, will be delighted by this incredibly detailed figurine, also as a gift. The Werewolf King of Arcadia becomes an impressive eye-catcher in any room.

Lycaon and Lycanthropy in Greek Mythology

Lycaon's transformation is among the earliest surviving werewolf tales of antiquity. The term "lycanthropy" derives linguistically from the Greek words for wolf and man; at the same time, Arcadia knew further tales of people who temporarily took on wolf form in the context of Zeus Lykaios. This way, the figurine combines Greek mythology and early werewolf tradition, and fits particularly well into a collection with Zeus, figures of ancient legend or other dark transformation motifs.
