Hades – God of the Dead and Lord of the Underworld

In Greek mythology, Hades is the god of the dead. He is also the ruler of the underworld, which is likewise called Hades. As a son of Cronus, leader of the Titans, and Rhea, the goddess of fertility, he was swallowed by his father after birth, out of fear that he might be dethroned by one of his children. Poseidon and Zeus are his brothers, and together they fought their father and the Titans with the help of the Cyclopes. After their victory, the world was divided among the sons, and Hades was given the underworld. He rules over it – the realm from which there is no return. The three-headed hellhound Cerberus guards the gate to it.

This Hades figurine with the hellhound comes from the well-known manufacturer Veronese. As you would expect from Veronese, Hades has been crafted in fine detail from polyresin and then bronzed and coloured. The Greek god of the underworld holds a bident in his left hand and the chain of Cerberus in his right. The hound rears up, its three heads raised in fury with bared jaws and its serpent tail held high. It seems to pull at the chain with all its might, so that Hades has trouble keeping the hellhound in check. Does he perhaps scent a fugitive?

Hades himself holds the chain with muscular, powerful arms. He wears only a reddish loincloth and an ornate belt with a large, likewise ornate buckle, so that his strength is shown to full effect. He also wears a vambrace on his right wrist and a shoulder plate on his left shoulder. His face is partly hidden by his wild hair and his beard. On his head sits a pointed crown. His gaze betrays anger, power and a strong will. He stands resolutely on a base in which his name has been engraved.
