When history and strategy come to life on the chessboard
In 1879, several fierce battles broke out in Zululand, South Africa, between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, ultimately resulting in a British victory. In the first battle, over 1,000 British soldiers, despite their technological superiority, were defeated by the Zulu warriors with their traditional weapons, such as short spears and shields, thanks to clever tactics. Meanwhile, only 150 British soldiers managed to defend the mission station against an overwhelming Zulu force. At the Battle of Ulundi in July 1879, the British defeated the Zulu army and King Cetshwayo was sent into exile. The heroic and tragic struggles of both sides can now be relived by skilled chess players with these impressive 32 chess pieces, carefully hand-painted and made from high-quality polyresin. The figures of the British army have a base of 2.5 x 2 cm, while the Zulu warriors’ bases are 2.5 cm in diameter. The ‘king’ of the British army stands 8 cm tall and the ‘pawns’ 6 cm. The Zulu king stands 8.5 cm, and the Zulu warrior ‘pawns’ 7 cm tall. This chess set is not only extraordinary and impressive, but also a fantastic gift for any history-minded chess player.
